03 | 08 | 2019 GP Ungarn / GP Hungary The Scuderia Ferrari drivers will start the 34th Hungarian Grand Prix from the second and third rows of the grid, when the race gets underway at 15.10 CET tomorrow. Charles Leclerc was fourth fastest in 1’15”043 and Sebastian was fifth with a lap that was just 28 thousandths of a second slower than his team-mate’s.

Q1. In the first part of qualifying, the Monegasque and the German easily made the cut to Q2 with time of 1’16”337 and 1’16”452 respectively. But on his second run, Charles made a mistake, crashing into the barriers on the outside of the final corner. The driver of the number 16 car managed to get back to the garage where the mechanics rushed to change the rear wing, and made repairs to other parts that had also sustained minor damage.

Q2. Charles was therefore able to carry on as normal in the second part and both he and Sebastian fitted medium tyres. Leclerc’s first run produced a 1’15”807, which he then dropped by 15 thousandths to 1’15”792. Sebastian made it through to the top ten shoot-out with a 1’15”885 set on his first attempt. It means that both drivers start the race on the Medium compound.

Q3. For the final part, both drivers went out on Softs aiming for maximum performance. Leclerc’s first attempt was a 1’15”437, while Vettel beat it with a 1’15”346. Pitting for fresh rubber, they set out again, Charles improving by almost four tenths to 1’15”043, which was 28 thousandths quicker than Sebastian’s 1’15”071.

Sebastian Vettel #5 “Today went pretty much as we expected and reflects what we have seen in the last few races. Our car is very quick down the straights but it’s not the best through the corners and that means we struggle to keep the tyres alive right to the end of the lap when we are trying for a quick time. You can see that from the fact we are quickest in sector 1 and then we suffer over the rest of the lap.
In fact, it will be a very difficult race in terms of tyre management and given the characteristics of our car, it would suit us to see high temperatures tomorrow, because we would then be able to put our competitors under pressure. If that’s not the case, then it will be a one stop race and it’s less likely that we can be in with a chance. Overtaking is difficult here, but not impossible, so let’s wait and see how things go tomorrow.”

02 | 08 | 2019 GP Ungarn / GP Hungary Friday’s free practice sessions for the Hungarian Grand Prix were not the most productive for Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, as indeed for the other 18 drivers out on track. The first session was slightly affected by light rain, but heavier more consistent wet weather was a feature of the 90 minutes of afternoon track time.

FP1. In the morning, the two Ferrari drivers ran the Soft tyre while working on dry set-up. Sebastian and Charles completed 54 laps between them; 25 for the German, the best being a 1’17”399 which put him third on the time sheet and 29 for the Monegasque, the quickest a 1’18”188, making him sixth.

FP2. A few minutes after the start of the afternoon session, rain fell again at the Hungaroring, so that everyone headed back to the garages. Up to that point, Charles Leclerc’s best time was a 1’18”852, which put him seventh on the time sheet. Sebastian Vettel stopped the clocks in 1’19”254, which in the end made him 13th fastest. The rain then intensified as the session progressed and the drivers went back out on intermediate tyres to gather data, as so far this season, this type of tyre has not been required much at all. In the second session, Sebastian did 24 laps, three more than Charles.

Tomorrow. The forecast suggests there should be no more rain for the rest of the weekend, so the third free practice session which starts tomorrow at noon CET, will be vitally important to prepare for both qualifying, which starts at 3pm and for Sunday’s race which gets underway at 3.10pm.

Sebastian Vettel #5 “The morning session wasn’t bad. I’m sure we can improve quite a bit because I don’t think we got all the potential out of the car on my quickest lap. In fact, more than going for a lap time, I was trying to get a good feeling from the car, which is why I think we can make progress. Having said that, we must wait until tomorrow to see where everyone stands and we know there is still work to do.
There’s not much to say about the afternoon, even if, in sessions like the second one there is always something to learn. For example we were able to do a few more laps on the intermediate tyres, after those we did in Hockenheim and that was useful for me.
As for the aero updates, it’s difficult to assess, but I can say they worked as we had expected.”

01 | 08 | 2019 GP Ungarn / GP Hungary Scuderia Ferrari and its drivers arrived in Hungary to find warm weather and clear skies, although rain, which played such a big part in shaping last Sunday’s race in Hockenheim, could be on the forecast for the coming days here as well. As usual, our drivers’ Thursday was all about meetings, some with the media and others with the engineers.

Track walk. Sebastian and Charles began the day with the usual track walk, before attending technical meetings to prepare for a race that is one of the most demanding for both car and driver. The first 90 minutes of free practice get underway tomorrow at 11 CET, with the second session beginning at 3pm.

Sebastian. Vettel was first to talk to the press in the team’s media motorhome. The German spoke about the car’s performance level. “I think we’ve made progress over the past few races,” he said. “We’re not where we want to be yet because we are not the quickest through the corners, but I think that compared to a few months ago, we are clearly better. The team is working efficiently. Mattia is a great help, because he ensures everyone can work in a calm, concentrated and quiet way, which is what is needed. The next two months will tell if we are on the right road. On paper the circuit is not the most suited to the characteristics of our car, but let’s see how things go when we are on the track.” Sebastian then spoke about the drivers’ role in deciding the future direction for Formula 1. “I think that we drivers are the right people to listen to, because we are only interested in the good of the category in which we race.”

In Sunday’s German Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari partially made up for the disappointment of a difficult qualifying on Saturday, as Sebastian Vettel managed to go from 20th and last place on the grid to second at the flag. He finished just over 7 seconds down on the winner, Max Verstappen. However, Charles Leclerc’s day was bitterly disappointing as he ended up beached in the gravel having hit the barrier at Turn 16 on lap 28, while lying second.

Good start. From tenth, Charles got off the line well as did Sebastian. At the end of the opening lap, the Monegasque was already sixth, having passed Grosjean, Gasly, Sainz and Perez. Sebastian was also moving up, going from 20th to 14th, eventually moving up to 12th as he disposed of Ricciardo. It was soon time to pit to go from full wets to intermediate tyres, making the most of the Safety Car that came out after Perez crashed. At the restart, Charles got past Hulkenberg and then Magnussen, to take fourth place, while Sebastian went from tenth to seventh.

Turn 16. The race stabilised for a while until it was time to switch from wet to dry tyres. On lap 23, Vettel came in for Softs, as did Leclerc four laps later. Then the rain returned unexpectedly to the Hockenheimring, more heavily than before and at the last corner on the following lap, Charles lost control of his car and ended up in the barriers. Before that, thanks to a perfect strategy from the team, he had moved up to second. His race was over, his SF90 stuck fast in the gravel trap. The team immediately called Seb in to again fit intermediates and he rejoined in eighth place.

Lap 41. On lap 41, the Safety Car came out again, when Hulkenberg went into the barriers at turn 16. Sebastian dashed for the pits to fit new intermediates in order to be able to lap faster than those around him. On lap 47, he made his final stop for Soft tyres as a dry line had by now appeared on the track. At this point he was ninth.

A thrilling fightback. On slicks, Sebastian was able to make the most of the SF90, and started carving his way through the field. The German passed Gasly, then Magnussen and dealing with Albon on lap 56 when the race was neutralised one last time after Bottas crashed. The final restart came on lap 60 as Sebastian dealt with Sainz and set off in pursuit of Stroll. He passed the Canadian for third with three laps to go and on the penultimate lap he even managed to get by Kvyat’s Toro Rosso to take the chequered flag in second place. It was an amazing comeback, with Seb giving it his all, helped by the team’s strategy and the the SF90 which has certainly made significant progress over the past few races.

Tenth podium. This is Scuderia Ferrari’s tenth podium finish of the season, the fifth for Vettel, who was also runner-up in Monaco and Canada and third in China and Azerbaijan. The next round takes place in Hungary next weekend.

“That was quite a race. I enjoyed it even though it was a tricky race, something of a lottery. It was a very long one and I don’t even remember all of it. It was very tough at times, especially on the intermediates in the slippery conditions. I made up a lot of ground immediately after the start and in the first couple of laps, even though it was difficult to see. After that, it was quite hard to get into a rhythm as I did not feel so comfortable on the intermediates and their degradation was quite high. It was hard to tell if the lack of grip was because of the track being greasy or because the tyres were going off.
To be honest in these kind of races you can’t count on anything until the last couple of laps. I think I was about P8 when the last safety car came out. There are so many decisions to make, but overall we stayed on track and in the race. In mixed conditions when it was starting to dry on the slicks I felt comfortable and that’s when we made up the most ground.”
